A man reportedly on a 50-day drinking bender was arrested Monday night when he tried to open a Delta Airlines plane’s cabin doors as it was landing at Salt Lake City Airport.

Anatoliy N. Baranovich, from the Ukraine, thought the Boeing 757 was on fire as the plane touched down and tried to open the rear cabin door. Passengers wrestled him to the ground before he succeeded.

“When it landed right at touchdown I could hear screaming in the back,” said passenger Doug Anderson.

“The look in his eyes was very different, it wasn’t drunk or stoned but yet the look in his eyes was very cold and very distant,” said Anderson.

‘According to the FBI, Anatoliy Baranovich thought the plane’s wing was on fire, and was opening the door to escape. He actually got a portion of the door system open before it jammed and passengers wrestled him to the ground.’

Baranovich is in police custody, and is charged with damaging and disabling an aircraft, and interfering with the flight crew.

    Dumbass!

  2. Shawn White says:

Is it possible to open a door while inflight like that? I thought the planes were pressurized, or is that only above 10,000 ft?

    • Christian says:

On or very close to the ground the differential pressure between cabin and exterior is so low that it would be possible to open a door. The pressurization is progressive from the ground up to cruizing level.

      • Phil Gibson says:

He wouldn’t have been able to open the door in flight, other than unlocking the pins, being the slipstream wind would be forcing the the door closed. Just a dumbass!

    Fly….Fly like the wind Anatoliy…..

  4. Phil says:

When will we start arming the flight crew with tasers? This is happening too often these days.

  5. Chris says:

I would have just let him jump out… It wouldn’t have posed any risk to anyone else (just as long as airport crews cleared the debris from the runway) and it would have thinned the herd.
