Delta Airlines 767 Makes Emergency Landing at JFK
A Delta Airlines plane en route to John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) from Frankfurt (FRA) had to make an emergency landing on Monday due to a cargo bay fire indicator light.
11 alive reports:
‘The crew of Delta Air Lines Flight 107, a 767 from Frankfurt, reported that the cargo bay fire indicator light came on in the cockpit and made an emergency landing around 2:30 p.m. The plane landed without incident.’
The emergency landing was done as a precaution.
There were no injuries.

Its not everyday you have cargo hold fire.
The incident aircraft (N1609) a 767-300ER, was delivered new to Delta in 2000, which makes it a relatively new 767. I’m glad the indicator was only a false alarm, as fire has brought down aircraft in the past.
I heard a figure a while ago concerning the crash of Valujet 592, the fact that it took only 3 minutes and 42 seconds for the fire to bring down the plane. Unlike airliners flying today, aircraft back then didn’t have fire warning systems in the cargo hold. In the case of Valujet 592, the crew didn’t find out they had a problem until the fire had started coming through the cabin floor, and by that time it only took 3 minutes and 42 seconds before it crashed. Can you imagine that?
It’s features like the cargo compartment fire detection/suppression system like the one in this 767 that can alert the crew in time for them to extinguish the fire before it’s too late. The retrofits to aircraft may have taken a lot of time, and the cost might have been noteworthy, but the benefits are life-saving.
I’ll take a false alarm any day!
Good point. Funny how the picture shows a B767-400 and -300ER.
The default Delta 767 in the above image is a 767-400ER. We’ve got to be the only ones who analyze the pictures too much!
Yup not many people can tell the (for us evident) differences in-between a Boeing B767-300ER and -400ER. Was the -400 made in any other variant then the ER?
I don’t think so, as far as i know the only operators are Delta and United.
