Very smart Pilot… A go around is a Badge of Intelligence! Good job my brother.

Agreed! Especially with an aircraft as large as the 777. It’s big, and doesn’t exactly “respond” quickly. It must have been an exciting experience for the passengers however- hearing those massive engines going to full TOGA power!

Back in April of 1985 I was PIC on a DC-9 Freighter on short final to Birmingham BHM. It was 2230 with LIFR FOG & rain We were at 800′ AGL for 24 when….BLINK… Everything went dark at the airport. My Co-Pilot said, “it’s ok I got the runway”. At the same time I pushed the throttles TOGA. He asked why, I told him I DIDN’T HAVE the RUNWAY, and I want to walk away from this thing tonight, we have plenty of time and fuel to let the B.O. power come on there. 5 minutes later they were back in service. What would be the hurry??

    • Chris says:

That was a good call on your part! I don’t know how the procedures were written back then, but i know that today both pilots must have the runway in sight-and for this very reason. It’s definitely not worth risking it. And you were flying the DC9?? Awesome! One of my favorite aircraft! Built like tanks.
