A United Airlines plane flying from Newark (EWR) to Seattle (SEA) returned to Newark for an emergency landing this morning when smoke was detected in the cockpit and the cabin.

The FAA reports that United Flight 409, a Boeing 757-200, landed safely at Newark at 9:15 a.m. EDT on Sunday and that no one was hurt.

“Preliminary indications are a possible problem with the air conditioning system,” according to FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.

Glad the plane landed safely! There are so many accidents that could have been avoided if their pilots took smoke in the cabin a little more seriously. It’s nice to see stories like this one here that end well- it’s all thanks to those who lost their lives in the past, in incidences that made us change how we deal with these issues.
