Delta Jet Scrapes Nose on Runway at Tampa When Nose Gear Fails to Open-UPDATE
A Delta Airlines MD-80 jet landed at Tampa International Airport on its nose Saturday night when the nose gear would not fully extend.
Delta Airlines Flight 2391, with 147 passengers aboard, landed safely on runway 19R with no one getting hurt.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports that the nose and the wheel door scraped the tarmac forcing crews to tow the MD88 aircraft to a gate.
The runway was closed briefly while crews carried out inspections. It was opened a short time later.
The jet was inbound from John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) and landed at 10:19 PM local time.
UPDATE:
Airnation.net contributor ‘Chris’ updated this story:
Actually there was nothing wrong with the nose gear. The gear was down and locked, but the main gear doors did not retract properly. When the plane landed, the doors scraped the runway under the main gear.

Interesting. Thanks for the update Chris. :)
Not a problem, Lee! :) And the incident aircraft was N902DE delivered new to Delta in 1992. It’s 20.6 years old, not even worked in for a Douglas jet!
