American Airlines Ending 757 Service Between JFK and Brussels

American Airlines has today announced that it intends cancel its Brussels (BRU) – New York (JFK) service, 6 November 2012 and, as a result, American intends to close its operations in Belgium.
The airline currently employs 28 positions at Brussels Airport and a further five in sales.
The airline intends to cancel the route in light of reviewed route performance, market forecasts and trends and the future outlook. Team members have been informed of the intention and the airline will be discussing the potential impact of the intended cancellation and all available options with those affected.
When necessary, American will also be contacting all passengers to make alternative travel arrangements for them where possible or to offer a full refund. We apologise for the inconvenience that this intended decision will cause.
Ben Mutzabaugh of USA Today also reports:
‘Despite posting its intention to drop the JFK-Brussels route, AA was still selling seats on the route (as of 11:30 a.m. ET) that extended past its announced Nov. 6 end date.
Assuming the route does end, Business Traveller magazine calls it “a blow to oneworld, as it leaves the alliance without a direct, non-stop service between New York and the capital of the European Union.”‘
American will continue to serve the Belgian market in conjunction with oneworld partners British Airways and Iberia with flight options through both London Heathrow and Madrid.
American currently flies the New York JFK-Brussels routes with Boeing 757-200 jets.

American Airlines may also halt service between Dallas/Fort Worth and Frankfurt, Germany, make its flights between DFW and Chicago (O’Hare) and Paris operate on a seasonal basis, pull out of San Jose, CA, Portland, Oregon, Sacramento, Ontario and Palm Springs, CA, Denver and Charlotte, N.C.
Tim, will please give your source of information? D/FW is American’s corporate headquarters primary hub. The D/FW-ORD route has always been a high frequency, high density route because it is between two of their major hubs. The route between D/FW and Frankfurt is also another major route for Amercan. I can see American canceling some NYC routes to Europe due to competition, but not their D/FW hub where they are the dominate carrier. Is there a corporate news release on this that I missed?
