A Lufthansa Airbus A380 Superjumbo suffered a hydraulic problem last Friday on approach to Frankfurt and forced the airliner to make an emergency landing.

Lufthansa Flight 711 was on final approach when the issue occurred. Reports say pilots were unable to operate the nose gear steering properly and initiated a ‘go-around’ for another landing attempt.

The A380 landed safely on runway 25C and stopped on the runway where emergency crews were waiting.

The aircraft was towed off after a delay.

There were no reported injuries.

Isn’t this a common problem with the A380? For the low number of examples flying, I’ve seen one too many malfunctions of the nose gear for this plane… With a plane of this size, i’d say a working nose gear is an important element of landing!

I believe there have been some early “calibration” issues with the nose undercarriage on A380 but thought it fixed by now. Obviously not! There have been several “events” with the nose undercarriage on the A320 – I wonder if related. Clearly Airbus need more focus on this issue, still. Landing without nose steering is just a slightly inconvenient problem and really it should have been sorted by now! Having said that, I was on board a Continental 747 landing in JFK that had to be towed from the runway – no steering. So this sort of thing does happen!
