A US Airways regional jet had to abort takeoff at Reagan Washington National Airport yesterday afternoon for a potential fire scare.

‘The flight, operated by Air Wisconsin, was departing for Islip, N.Y., when an engine heat warning indicator came on and the pilot called for assistance. Andrew Christie, a spokesman for US Airways, told NBC News that takeoff for Flight 3652 was aborted “out of an abundance of caution.”‘

The runway that the Canadair CRJ-200 plane was on was closed briefly while fire crews investigated the incident.

No fire was detected but the plane was taken out of service and passengers rebooked on other flights.

There were no injuries.

I love hearing about incidences like this; it shows we’ve really come a long way and learned our lessons from the losses from prior accidents. We know now how dangerous a “real” fire could be (concorde, BA 737, etc) at this stage of a flight and i think it’s wonderful that we take so many precautions now. Thank you to this crew who decided to abort, and thank you to all the engineers who have built these safety systems into planes- even if they’re sometimes false alarms!
