A Japan Airlines (JAL) Boeing 777 jet returned to Narita Airport yesterday afternoon after the airline received an email saying there was a bomb planted inside the aircraft.

The JAL flight took off from Narita at 11:50 AM Wednesday morning headed to New York with 256 passengers and crew and reportedly the threat was received at 1:30 PM.

‘Jiji Press news agency reported Thursday that the email demanded the release of Shoko Asahara, the mastermind behind the 1995 Tokyo subway gas attacks, which killed 13 and injured thousands.

The plane was ordered back to Narita International Airport at 3:10 p.m. as it was flying over the Aleutian island chain in the north Pacific, a company official said. It arrived back at Narita at around 8 p.m. Wednesday.’

The flight made a safe landing and there were no injuries. The passengers were put on another flight for New York.
