Yikes, does anyone know what happened?? It was a 737-400 i assume, sort of an old bird…
Probably a bird strike since from the sounds of the article it was external damage.
The problem with FAA reports is sometimes they don’t reveal everything. I will say this: I do not think it was a bird strike.
I agree, i don’t think a bird could cause significant damage to the horizontal stabilizer; at least not more than a bump to the leading edge. I want pictures!!
Pictures would be great. But, unless it was hail, what else could cause damage to it?
In my experience in trying to find out…when they don’t tell you they don’t want you to know…
Lee, do you think the damage occurred during this flight? Or maybe the crew failed to notice the damage before taking off? This reminds me of the Aeroperu 757 which crashed into the ocean in 1996. Apparently prior to the flight the plane was being washed so mechanics covered the static ports with duct tape (to prevent soap from getting in). And let’s just say no removed the tape and the crew didn’t notice before taking off… That plane was unflyable! Planes aren’t designed to fly out of configuration and especially with damage!! If that’s the case here, someone’s gonna lose their job :(
Chris….based on what I ‘know’…the damage did NOT occur in flight. I also think someone knew about the damage and allowed the plane to fly…but that is just my …… ‘guess’.
