A Delta Airlines flight flying from San Diego (SAN) to Atlanta (ATL) diverted to Los Angeles International (LAX) due to a landing gear problem this morning.

Delta Flight 1692, a Boeing 767-300 aircraft, took off from San Diego at 11:25 AM PDT and was in its climb when pilots were unable to retract the landing gear. After unsuccessfully solving the issue they diverted to LAX for a precautionary emergency landing.

The jet made a safe landing and there were no injuries.  There were 267 people aboard.

The aircraft is being inspected by mechanics to locate the specific issue and flyers are being put on other flights.

So all those poor people are stuck at LAX?? Why wouldn’t they turn back to San Diego?

I was wondering that too Chris. They circled around SAN a bit trying to fix the issue then headed to LAX.

Can you find out what happened to the passengers? My guess is that the crew made contact with company and maybe found a big plane at LAX that could take the passengers onwards? I know they fly the 777 and a lot of 767′s from LAX quite often, as LAX is a known “hub” for many international flights. It would suck for passengers if they were ditched in LAX for the day thought! LOL

I’m thinking they diverted to LAX for two reasons: First: LAX is probably better equipped to support emergencies, especially a larger plane such as a 767-300. I’m guessing longer runways, more first responders, frequency of responding to emergencies, etc. Second: I think they used it because of it being a hub for many airlines. Most likely they could accommodate passengers on alternate Delta or code share partner flights to their destinations even if not through ATL, or use a suitable alternate aircraft available at LAX. Not sure, just speculation.
