U.S. Airlines Hiking Fares This Week
Air fare hikes by 5 of the biggest U.S. carriers being pushed out this week looks like they’re going to stick according to reports.
United Airlines started the fare hike at the end of last week by raising air fares an average of $4 to $10 a ticket and this week Delta, American Airlines and US Airways have followed suit.
Fares don’t always stick if other airlines don’t ‘jump in’ to match the fare increase but Southwest Airlines has also matched the increase making very likely the fare hike will stick.
“Southwest participation virtually assures the hike will stick — making this the fourth successful domestic hike in seven attempts this year,” said Rick Seaney, the CEO of FareCompare.com.
But Seaney said this is probably the last fare increase…for awhile at least.
“Given the slower fall season starting at the end of August it is unlikely we will see another hike in the next few months.”
