Austrian Airlines are phasing out their 737s, but will keep their 777s (pictured) for their long-haul routes

Austrian Airlines has begun its switch from Boeing aircraft to Airbus planes for its medium-haul routes it announced last Friday.

The Lufthansa-owned carrier is phasing out its Boeing 737-800 aircraft while it phases in Airbus A320 airplanes. They have signed a letter of intent to lease 5 A320s and have already taken delivery of 2.

The carrier says their reason for switching is to have one make in their fleet for their medium-haul routes to save on maintenance and training.

Austrian Airlines has 81 total planes in its fleet, including 10 Boeing 767 and 777s for longer haul routes that they intend to keep.

At present this airline has 7 A319′s, 11 A320′s, 6 A321′s and only 7 737-800′s. Having the 737′s must be frustrating to the maintenance people! There’s no question having the entire fleet by one manufacturer is the best way to go, especially now that the cockpits are practically identical in each company’s models.

…and yet they are keeping the 777s. Of course how could you ever get rid of that plane?? :)

No idea Kenneth!! The 777 is a magnificent aircraft. It’s gonna be weird seeing them get mothballed and torn up when they get old :( They seem like an eternal being!
