Southwest Airlines will drop its 5 flights-a-day service between Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando, according to a spokesperson on Monday.

“This market is shorthaul and carries a very high percentage of connecting, longer-haul customers,” Southwest spokesperson Ashley Dillon said. “Through our optimization process, we have created more convenient ways to get these customers to their destinations through different itineraries.”

The route will stop in January of next year.

Southwest is the number 3 carrier on this particular route in terms of passenger traffic behind Spirit Airlines and JetBlue.

I guess it makes sense. Spirit Airlines flies direct from Fort Lauderdale to Orlando, two times a day with a price of about $54-$80. I don’t think Southwest is making any money offering a cheaper fare!

Yeah…this particular route they haven’t done well on. Doesn’t happen very often with Southwest. :)
