FedEx will buy 16 additional Boeing 767 aircraft as the Memphis-based shipper continues to upgrade its fleet to newer, more fuel efficient aircraft.

The latest purchase announced last Friday is for planes that will be delivered from fiscal 2015 to 2019 and will replace current MD-10 and A310-200 aircraft, FedEx said.

FedEx also completed a deal with Boeing for 27 new 767s in December of last year…those planes are to be delivered between 2014 and 2018.

The new 767s have about the same capacity as FedEx’s existing MD-10 fleet but are 30 percent more fuel efficent.

“FedEx Express is positioning itself for more profitable growth by modernising its aircraft fleet and better aligning its US domestic air network to match current and anticipated shipment volumes,” FedEx Express chief executive David Bronczek said in a statement.

Financial terms were not disclosed for the new purchase.
