American Airlines MD-80

An American Airlines flight bound for Chicago O’Hare (ORD) from Phoenix (PHX) diverted to Rapid City Airport (RAP) in South Dakota when pilots had to shut down one of its engines.

American Flight 1270, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft, landed at Rapid City at 7:29 PPM local time with 140 passengers aboard but no one was hurt.

The engine problem is being investigated my mechanics.

I can’t imagine that the issue isn’t something mechanics haven’t seen before, this engine has been around for so long!!

Could be a banana in the tailpipe. :)

I was in several MD-80 diversions due to engine issues. Not that it’s a bad plane, we just flew a lot of them!

    • Chris says:

Tina, did you work for an airline who operated the MD80?

      • Tina Medrone says:

I worked at American from 2001-2008 Chris. I flew hundreds of flights on MD-82s and 83s.

        • Chris says:

That’s awesome, Tina! Do you miss flying at all?

          • Tina Medrone says:

I miss the flying and the people Chris but not the political BS that got really bad when I retired.

AA was already squeezing us bad by the time I left (long hours, cutting pay, cutting benefits).

They stopped caring, period. It’s sad because it used to be a great airline.

Let’s hope they are reborn, but I think it will be a long process if it happens at all.

I agree Tina, it’s sad what’s been happening within the airlines and especially with this economy. I was speaking with 2 Delta flight attendants in January, one of which has been flying for 15 years and still cannot get Christmas off! And Delta recently removed the rear galley from their MD88′s so they have no place to keep trash and carts, etc. We keep hearing stories of crews not being able to find time for lunch, and being rushed to get planes turned around. It doesn’t appear like it’s getting better either :/
