I find it interesting that young airlines such as Lion air (est 1999) are buying these new-age airplanes, and older airlines (such as American, British Airways, United) can barely hold on. I feel as though younger airlines shouldn’t be so “daring” especially in this economy. They’d probably be better off ordering some 767′s rather than dishing out the extra 20 million dollars EACH for the unfamiliar 787. I still can’t believe this airline ordered 201 737MAX and 133 737-900ER aircraft… Where are they getting all this money from?? LOL

I think what happens is huge orders like this never happen…meaning, it looks great on the ledger sheets but a good percentage of the order are ‘options’ to buy, but it’s documented as an ‘order’.

Also remember these planes get delivered over many years, and in some cases 15 to 20 years.

Oh true true, didn’t think of that! But still… that’s a HUGE commitment.

      • Jim Thodo says:

Also think of it this way Chris: If the airline does really well in the coming years (growth…profit) then the carrier has a price that they ‘locked’ in years ago when they need new planes.

        • Chris says:

I never thought of it that way before, that’s a good point! The price of aircraft is increasing exponentially- it’s scary. It’s funny to think that the price of a brand new 727 in 1982 was 4.25 million, and in 2002 the price of a new 757 was 65 million! I know the 75′ gets better fuel economy than the 72′ does, but come on… 61 million dollars worth (65-4.25)??

Airlines would have been better off buying a lot of 727′s and keeping them locked up for 30 years LOL. The planes themselves INCREASE in value!! Today, you can’t buy a used 727 (in any condition) for 4.25 million dollars!
