An American Airlines jet had to abort its flight and return to Raleigh-Durham Airport yesterday due to an oil leak.

Pilots on American Flight 1645 was bound for Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and noticed the oil leak on the left hand engine shortly after takeoff, shut it down and returned the MD-83 to Raleigh-Durham (RDU).

‘Airport officials said the pilot noticed the leak shortly after taking off from Raleigh for Chicago around 8:15 a.m. Sunday. The first attempt at an emergency landing was scrapped, but the pilot brought the plane down safely as emergency crews stood by on the second attempt.’

There were 138 passengers on the flight. No one was injured.

There has been no reason given why the pilot aborted the first landing attempt and whether it had anything to do with the engine.
