Allegiant MD-80 Returns to Duluth, Engine Failure
An Allegiant Air flight heading to Las Vegas yesterday had to abort and return to Duluth, Minnesota when one of its engines failed.
Allegiant Flight 449, Duluth International (DLH) to Las Vegas McCarran (LAS), suffered the engine failure about 50 minutes in to the flight.
“It was a really loud bang,” said Lisa Clements of Chisholm, who was sitting by the engine with her 8- and 9-year-old daughters. “We just told them it was OK.”
Pilots landed the MD-80 (MD-83) safely and there were no injuries. There were 141 passengers and 5 crew aboard.
The flight was cancelled and the aircraft was taken out of service.

Does anyone know how well this airline maintains their planes? They only have 58 MD80′s compared to American with 204 and Delta with 117, yet Allegiant seems to have the highest frequency of MD80 “incidents”…
I also wonder how many hours are on those aircraft…
Probably a lot! Their ages range from 1985-1996 (a bit newer than those of American Airlines) and come from verying over-seas airlines. See here for the list of all of them: http://www.planespotters.net/Production_List/search.php?manufacturer=McDonnell-Douglas&type=MD-80&fleet=5419&fleetStatus=1
come on, some of the other airlines have had more mishaps. Book american if your unhappy.
