A pilot for Piedmont Airlines has been charged by authorities for bringing a loaded gun on to a flight in Buffalo bound for New York City.

‘The U.S. Attorney’s Office charged 52-year-old Brett Dieter of Barboursville, Va., with possessing a concealed firearm. A screener spotted the .357 Magnum before Dieter boarded Friday at Buffalo Niagara International Airport [BUF].

Dieter was to pilot a Piedmont Airlines flight to LaGuardia International Airport. [LGA]‘

Authorities think Dieter has been flying with the gun since last Wednesday.

Pilots cannot carry weapons on airliners unless they members of the Flight Deck Officer Program. Dieter is not a member.

Piedmont is a subsidiary of US Airways.

Looks like they stopped another Auburn Calloway! (he was a Fedex employee who tried to kill the crew of a flight he was jumpseating on).

Damn! When did that happen Chris??

      • Chris says:

Ahh it was Fedex 705 in 1994… He attacked the pilots but they managed to subdue him and land the plane safely… Who would ever think that airline employees would try to bring a plane down? I’m not really sure if i’d be worried about a pilot bringing a gun on board though… If the pilot wanted to kill everyone it would probably be simpler to just crash it, no?

        • Kenneth Holland says:

Agreed. It would be hard to bring down a plane directly from a gun.

Haha, Mythbusters actually did an episode to find out if a bullet hole in the fuselage skin would result in a massive decompression and/or in-air break up… it didn’t happen. There was a tiny “whistle” of air and the cabin didn’t even de-pressurize!

yeah and also a gunshot wound is very hard to confuse with a plane crash injuries which is why Auburn Calloway brought a hammer as its less easy to distigush. all you would have had to do then is fly for 1/2 hour and no cvr record then switch it off and crash the plane.

Never saw that Chris. Gonna have to look up that episode.

    • Chris says:

It was a good one! They did it to an old DC9, and of course the episode ended with a big boom (Mythbusters style with explosives of course)!
